Germanium Diodes Market

A germanium diode is a diode made of germanium instead of silicon. Germanium has the property that the bandgap energy is approximately equal to the energy of near-infrared photons. This means that if light of this wavelength is shined on a germanium diode, electrons can be excited and an electric current can be generated. Therefore, we use germanium diodes as photodetectors to detect near-infrared light for telecommunication applications. The important thing about germanium diodes is that their forward voltage is lower than that of silicon. Germanium diodes may be used in RF circuits that require lower voltages and sometimes better high frequency response due to their (usually) lower capacitance.
