Piezoelectric materials (crystalline solids lacking a centre of inversion symmetry and representing strong coupling between mechanical strain and electrical polarization) are commonly employed in acoustic sensors to generate acoustic waves in solid materials using appropriately tailored electric fields and to detect the acoustic waves by the charge generated due to the induced mechanical deformation. Quartz is commonly used as it is abundant, amenable to low-cost volume manufacturing and is associated with excellent mechanical properties and good chemical stability. Depending on the cut of the quartz crystal, different properties can be realized. There are two traditional ?cuts? for the quartz crystal used in acoustic sensors: the AT cut and the ST cut. These differences cause different piezoelectric deformations, which allow acoustic waves to efficiently propagate in different directions: either along the surface of the sensor, or away from the sensor surface towards the bulk substrate. This distinction is quite important and is the basis of the classification of acoustic sensors into either surface acoustic wave (SAW) or bulk acoustic wave (BAW) sensors.
