Apigeninidin is one of the principal pigments found in sorghum. Extremely high level of apigeninidin (49 mg/g) has been documented in sorghum leaf sheath. Like all anthocyanidins it exists in a variety of tautomers depending on pH and hydration, several of these bare the distinctive pyrylium core.Apigenin is a protein kinase inhibitor. Suppresses tumor-promoting effects of TPA and exhibits antiproliferative activity in human breast cancer cells (IC50 values are 59.44 and 31.15 M at 24 and 72 hrs respectively). Activates both the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways and displays anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, antispasmodic and antioxidant properties in vivo.Apigenin, found in many plants, is a natural product belonging to the flavone class that is the aglycone of several naturally-occurring glycosides. Apigenin acts as a monoamine transporter activator, one of the few chemicals demonstrated to possess this property. Apigenin is a ligand for central benzodiazepine receptors that competitively inhibited the binding of flunitrazepam with a Ki of 4M, exerting anxiolytic and slight sedative effects.
